20th anniversary of Pink Ladies celebrated with annual sunset walk

Friday 25 June 2021

The Pink Ladies charity supports women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend.

The annual Sunset Coastal Walk will take place this Saturday, with tickets costing £10 and all the proceeds going to local women affected by breast cancer.

Anyone is welcome to join and there are two routes available; one starts at Grandes Rocques and is 10.5 miles, while the second joins at Bordeaux and is 3.5 miles. Both finish at Market Square.

There’ll be live music, food, and drinks at the finish line.

“The Pink Ladies have had the support of islanders for twenty years, which has allowed us to work with women and local health services to improve women’s experience of breast cancer,” said Chairwoman Karen Leach.

“We know from women going through treatment during these last 12 months that is has been really tough mentally and emotionally.

“This year more than ever we want to put a spotlight on the need to be breast aware, go for your cancer screening when invited and seek advice if you have any unexplained symptoms,” she said.

The return of the TPA-sponsored walk has been welcomed after its postponement last year.

"The walk has raised over £500,000 since 2017, with around £60,000 raised in 2019,", said Pink Ladies treasurer Doreen Le Poidevin.

"All money raised from the event stays on island and helps with everything from training, equipment and facilities in the Guernsey Breast Unit, to paying for wigs and cleaning for those recovering from treatment. Many of the participants take part for personal and often emotional reasons, giving them the extra incentive."

The first route starts at 18:00 and the second, shorter route starts at 19:30. You can register HERE.
