2018 Community Awards return with revamped Youth Award

Monday 13 August 2018

Guernsey's annual Community Awards are returning to St James on the 13 November.

The event, hosted by the Guernsey Community Foundation in collaboration with principal sponsor State Street, will see awards presented across seven categories. Nominations open for the awards in the middle of this month, with more details to come.

“Every year, the Community Awards shine a spotlight on local charities, individuals and businesses who work tirelessly – often with little fanfare – to improve the lives of thousands of people across the Bailiwick,” Jim Roberts, Chief Executive of the Guernsey Community Foundation, said.

“From fundraising to organising to volunteering, so many people are giving so much – and that deserves to be celebrated.”

The Community Foundation has also announced the appointment of a new Chair of the Community Awards Judging Panel, Advocate Jason Green, who succeeds Andrew Ozanne.

The seven categories for the awards are as follows:

  • Charity of the Year – sponsored by State Street
  • Fundraising Team of the Year – sponsored by Cazenove Capital Management
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement – sponsored by PwC Channel Islands
  • Innovation Award – sponsored by Specsavers
  • Organising Committee of the Year – sponsored by RG Falla
  • CSR Award – sponsored by RBC Wealth Management
  • Youth Award – sponsored by Guernsey Electricity

This year, more young people than ever before will have a chance to win a coveted Community Award.

Since 2011, the Youth Award has recognised and celebrated the achievements of individuals aged 11 to 25. Now, for the first time, groups of young people will be eligible for nomination.

Mr Roberts added: "The Community Awards are all about cooperation and collaboration – about people working together to achieve great things – and so it made sense to allow groups of young people to be nominated for the Youth  Award. ‘Groups’ can mean anything from two people up. Best friends, youth clubs, tutor groups — we’re not being prescriptive.

"And of course individuals can continue to be nominated, just like in previous years.”

The Youth Award, he said, recognised people who have made a positive difference to the community by caring for another person, volunteering, overcoming adversity, raising awareness of a particular issue, or organising an event that has improved Islanders’ quality of life.

More details about the event itself and all of last year’s winners can be found at www.communityawards.gg.
