11 achieve Gold

Sunday 10 November 2019

11 young people from Guernsey have been invited to St James’ Palace to be presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award certificates by the Earl of Wessex.

Receiving a Gold Award is seen as a great achievement that requires a range of skills and determination.

The young people completing the award have taken part in a week’s residential placement, two four day expeditions, committed to a skill and a physical activity and have completed at least 12 months of volunteering.

Nineteen young people in the Bailiwick of Guernsey have achieved their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award so far during 2019 and each of them will be invited to the Palace to receive their Award at one of these presentations. Each young person is able to also invite one personal guest to support them at the Palace.

In last year’s statistics 381 young people registered for a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. 144 Awards were achieved over the three levels: 160 Bronze awards, 38 Silver awards and 28 Gold awards.

Anyone aged between 14 and 24 can do a programme at one of the three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are four sections at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold.
- Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
- Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
- Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
- Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
- At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing shared activity.
