1,000+ covid cases for the first time

Friday 24 December 2021

The Bailiwick now has more than 1,000 known active cases of covid-19. It is the first time since the pandemic arrived nearly two years ago that the number of cases has gone into four figures.

Known active cases increased by exactly 100 over the past 24 hours. There were 185 new cases and 85 recoveries. In total, there are 1,027 known active cases. In addition, 326 people await results from PRC tests.

There have been nearly 600 new cases identified in the past four days. However, there have been no new covid-related hospitalisations in that period and there continues to be three people in hospital with the virus.

There have now been nearly 6,500 positive cases in the Bailiwick.

The Medical Officer of Health, Dr Nicola Brink, said last week that the Bailiwick could expect "a tidal wave of omicron" cases over the next few weeks. She appealed for more people to have booster vaccines and the Bailiwick responded by smashing the previous record for most vaccinations administered in a single week. Dr Brink has also said "there are encouraging reports appearing of a disease [omicron] which appears to be milder".
