£100 a year will get you into GPEG

Thursday 02 December 2021

GPEG - Guernsey's first 'think tank' on growth, social policy and the economy - is offering islanders the chance to become members for £100 a year. Couples can join at a reduced rate of £150 a year.

The benefits of membership include a seat at a discussion of topical matters each winter, the right to stand for election as a director of GPEG and an invitation to a summer drinks party. Corporate rates are available to businesses who wish to join.

GPEG - The Guernsey Policy and Economic Group - said "the purpose of the scheme is to create a community of people who want to do the right thing for Guernsey".

Anyone interested in becoming a member should visit the organisation's website HERE.

GPEG is led by four people well known locally for their involvement in business: The Right Honourable The Lord Jones of Birmingham, who is Chairman, and Connie Helyar-Wilkinson, Jon Moulton and Susie Crowder, who are Directors.

It describes itself as a "not-for-profit, apolitical organisation committed to providing independent research, analysis and advocacy relating to growth strategy, social policy and the economy of the Bailiwick".

It states that it works "with the community, politicians and the public sector towards a more sustainable, efficient economy, fair taxation, infrastructure, thriving local business, internationally competitive policies and proportionate responses to demographic change with the aim of creating an opportunity for all".

Pictured: GPEG recently celebrated its first anniversary by releasing a video on social media which featured a discussion between its Chairman and Directors.

In the past year, GPEG has produced reports on several areas of States' activity, including capital expenditure and the States' accounts. It has been particularly critical of proposals for anti-discrimination legislation which are currently working their way through the States.

GPEG has said that the proposed legislation, which is being led by the Committee for Employment & Social Security, overstates the scale of discrimination in Guernsey and understates the costs of compliance and that "Guernsey culture will suffer" if the proposed legislation is enacted.

Pictured (top): The Chairman of GPEG, Lord Digby Jones, and one of the Directors, Jon Moulton, are well-known figures in business nationally as well as locally. Lord Jones is a former Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry. Mr Moulton has spent 40 years in private equity.
