WhatsApp launches group video and voice calling

WhatsApp has announced users can now make group calls in both video and voice form with up to three friends.

The extension to the messaging app’s existing one-to-one calling feature will be end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp said, and it confirmed it would now start rolling out to users on both iOS and Android.

“You can make a group call with up to four people total – anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new ‘add participant’ button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call,” WhatsApp said of the update.

The app is already used to make two billion minutes of calls per day, and the Facebook-owned firm will now hope to extend that figure further with groups of friends and co-workers taking up the opportunity to use the new feature.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of another recent update to WhatsApp that saw the app limit the amount of different conversations a message or link can be forwarded to.

The move was in response to reports of misinformation and rumour causing a range of incidents, some of them violent, in some parts of the world – including India – as a result of extensive message forwarding.
