Netflix has announced a series of parental control updates that will make its streaming service more family friendly.
The updates include an option to set PIN codes on individual series or films, as well as improvements to content ratings, which will give parents more control over what their children watch.
To make it easier to vet certain content, the streaming service will display the maturity level rating for a series or film once the title begins to play. The company says it’s also exploring other ways to make ratings more descriptive and easy to understand.
Netflix’s current parental controls include individual profiles for each family member, a Kids user interface, and a PIN control for all content at a given maturity level.
Mike Hastings, director of enhanced content at Netflix, said: “We understand that every family is different and that parents have differing perspectives on what they feel is appropriate to watch at different ages.
“While these maturity ratings are available in other parts of the experience, we want to ensure members are fully aware of the maturity level as they begin watching.”
Netflix says the feature will roll out worldwide in the coming months.
The improvements come as Disney announced it will be ending its distribution agreement with Netflix for new releases, with a planned launch of its own streaming service in 2019.
