A new smartphone can survive underwater, cope with extreme temperatures and endure vibration exposure, according to its developers.
The Land Rover Explore can also operate and navigate in extreme conditions for two full days with the screen on constantly.
The phone has been developed by car manufacturer Land Rover with the Bullitt Group and is inspired by Land Rover’s 4x4s.
This is, the company tells us, a phone for “those with an adventurous spirit”.
The phone has a full HD five-inch glass screen which can be controlled even when hands are wet or in gloves.
It can cope with being underwater – even in salt water – to 1.8 metres, thanks to a factory-fitted screen protector and protective case.
The phone runs on Android Nougat OS with a scheduled upgrade to Oreo.
“This is the smartphone we’d all like to own – a perfect combination of design and functionality that embodies the Land Rover DNA and enables customers to be outdoors for longer, with the confidence to go further,” said Joe Sinclair, director of branded goods and licensing at Jaguar Land Rover.
The phone comes with premium grade off-road mapping from ViewRanger and contains its own compass and SOS light.
It has a 16MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera and 4x digital zoom. It’s underpinned by 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM, expandable via microSD.
For anyone who wants to ramp up the specifications, they can add the Adventure Pack. It brings in additional battery life and adds a 25x25mm ceramic patch GPS antenna.
The patch can boost the reliability and accuracy of the signal and improve mapping capabilities.
The phone, which is fully compatible with all Land Rover in-car apps, will be officially unveiled at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, on February 26.
