Fifa 19 hands-on: Champions League brings added polish

With each Fifa update comes another attempt from developer EA Sports to bring the video game ever closer to the real thing – and Fifa 19 takes another step towards that.

As technology improves, it is no surprise that the game will start to look better and more realistic, but the polished manner in which the game has integrated the Champions League – as well as Europa League and Uefa Super Cup – make it understandable for some to mix up the game with a live TV match.

The small details such as the animations of the on-screen graphics, which smoothly fade in and out of view coupled with how the in-game stadiums and team kits are alternated to carry the Champions League logo and sponsors are all perfectly re-created.

On the pitch, the action is more fluid and snappier than Fifa 18’s offering. 50-50 jostles are now not only more common but also crucial as a method of successfully stopping the opposition.

EA Sports also appears to have taken a shine to the Liverpool and Manchester City’s of this world, with high-pressing football mixed with short, sharp passes now forming the backbone of many games.

In tactical gameplay terms, EA has also introduced the new Dynamic Tactics system, which gives players greater power in how they want their teams to set up.

Players can now create and set different custom gameplans before matches, which can then be implemented using the different arrows on the D-Pad.

For those who fancy themselves as something of a Pep Guardiola, this will be music to your ears.

Fifa 19 will be released on September 28.
