The next chapter of the Fallout series will be an entirely online game filled with real people users can interact with.

Developer Bethesda confirmed Fallout 76 is a prequel to all the other games in the series and will go on sale in November.

The first details of the game were revealed on stage during the company’s press conference before the E3 video games convention, which begins on Tuesday.

The game will also be bigger than any previous Fallout title, Bethesda said – four times the size of 2015’s Fallout 4.

Set in post-apocalyptic West Virginia, it sees players take on the role of an occupant of Vault 76, one of the first to open following the nuclear apocalypse.

It was also given a release date – November 14.

Also discussed was Rage 2, the part Mad Max, part Borderlands shooter that was announced recently.

Bethesda’s event also saw a Doom sequel unveiled.

Doom Eternal will contain twice as many demons as the last game, the firm said, and will deliver “hell on earth”.

As well as big new games, Bethesda also used the event to show off new content for some of its existing games.

Both Prey and Wolfenstein have downloadable content (DLC) updates on the way over the next year – much to the delight of fans.

Not only that, but the company closed its event by looking to the future, showing off teasers of two new games currently in development.

The first is Starfield, a brand new franchise set in space, but little else is currently known about.

The second was confirmation of the development of a game Bethesda itself admitted is the title it is most asked about by fans – a follow-up to The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

A teaser trailer gave very little away, but just the acknowledgement that Elder Scrolls VI is in the works will be an E3 highlight for many.
