Chinese school uses facial recognition technology to monitor behaviour

A school in eastern China is using facial recognition technology to see how students react to the classes they take.

A single classroom at Hangzhou Number 11 High School is currently using the technology, which is made up of three cameras above the blackboard.

The cameras assess the students’ expressions as they learn, working out who is engaged and who is not.

The school cameras recognise seven different expressions and emotions – neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, scared, angry and surprised.

Notifications can then be sent to the teacher, while the technology can also be used to monitor attendance.

According to the Daily Telegraph, one student told Hangzhou.com: “Previously when I had classes that I didn’t like very much, I would be lazy and maybe take naps on the desk, or flick through other textbooks.

“But I don’t dare be distracted after the cameras were installed in the classrooms. It’s like a pair of mystery eyes are constantly watching me.”

The move has divided opinion, with some saying the privacy of the students in class is being infringed, and others claiming it will improve behaviour.
