This month’s cover isn’t a typical image for a business magazine. Still. Why not?

Turn to page 28 and you’ll read a story of a lady who worked in the local finance industry before deciding that although she was good at what she did, it wasn’t something to spend the rest of her career doing – so she turned her passion for nutritious food into a new business, with possibilities of expansion into Guernsey and London. And that was all with a very young family.

We’re profiling Lucy Morris this month for this reason. She had the courage to make a change, and to follow it through, at a time when there would have been plenty of compelling reasons just to carry on as before – but that wouldn’t have been the ‘right’ road to take.

It sounds simple, but actually, deciding to do something differently is difficult and rare. The urge to carry on as before is always strong.

Hold that thought for a minute, and then immerse yourself (sorry, stick with it) in our Unplugged feature on page 18.

What you’ll read is a story of people who are trying to do the right thing, but who are essentially still following patterns of the past. Changes are being made - moving most States departments to one building on La Motte street would be a major, and laudable, one – but the core mentality remains: the State will provide, and it’s up to us to pay for it.

It seems to me that we all need to accept that we will pay more in tax, as Long Term Care and Health ‘charges’ are added to IT IS, and businesses pass on new waste charges to their customers – or we are prepared to accept the States doing much less. The choice is that simple, but do we have the courage to make it?

It’s a subject we’ll get into in the coming months in Connect, which is why we thought we’d kick off the Autumn with a story of one lady who had the courage to think differently.

Enjoy Connect.
