March 2024

With March coinciding with International Women’s Day this month, our focus when working on this issue of CONNECT has been on how women ‘smash barriers’, in particular those in the workplace.

We started by rewinding 100 years to the election of 1924.

Marie Randall truly smashed barriers when she broke one of many glass ceilings in Guernsey.

She was the first woman elected to the States of Deliberation, and although a fair few have followed in her footsteps, women continue to be heavily outnumbered by men at every election since.

Ms Randall’s landmark election and her other achievements have been commemorated with a blue plaque at the site of her former family home. The Deputy Bailiff – Jessica Roland – was there to unveil the plaque

Ms Roland was the first woman appointed as Deputy Bailiff in Guernsey, and she and other women in senior roles in both the public and private sectors, took the time to tell us about their own career paths, the challenges they’ve faced, and how they hope to empower their colleagues.

While compiling these articles – featuring women who have truly shattered barriers - I found myself struggling with ‘imposter syndrome’, which is always heightened at certain times of the month and when deadlines are creeping closer. I felt reassured to read that Bethan Haines – Guernsey’s States Treasurer – has also experienced imposter syndrome. Finding common ground like this is a good way of building resilience and I felt a sense of comfort to know that I am not alone. I felt empowered by reading the words of Ms Haines, and other public and private sector leaders in our community. I hope you do too.

I also felt a real high after meeting ATR Captain Maaike Capazario. Our front cover star works for Aurigny and as well as piloting commercial flights, she is a training manager signing off other pilots too. Her words of advice to other aviation enthusiasts are well worth reading if you share her soaring ambitions!

To whet your appetite further as you delve into CONNECT, this month we head to a popular Havelet eaterie for Bite Back, artist Olympia McEwan kept us female focused for Soul Food, and we learnt about KTea Kombucha.

There’s much more to read too with thanks to Health Care Group, Gillian Jordan of Stonehage Fleming, Julie-anne Headington from CI Loss Adjusters, FDS, and Ed Jones from Butterfield. If you have a story you’d like to tell for a future issue please do get in contact, in the meantime – enjoy CONNECT.
