There are some Guernsey events that sit big on the annual calendar; the parish shows, Liberation Day, Vale Earth Fair... the Harbour Carnival, which makes its return on Friday 23 August!
The latter has been running for decades, and it’s an event that makes the most of the island’s two greatest assets; St Peter Port and the ocean.
It’s the perfect time of year to shake off the week, get the family together, and head down to the seafront to watch, and compete in, the iconic competitions.
All the classics have returned, including the corporate Duck Race, the Tug of War, the Man-powered Flight competition, and the Ladies Dinghy Race. There’ll be food, there’ll be fireworks, and there’s even a dedicated kidzone.
Some teams have been competing for more than 20 years and some remain undefeated. It’s expected that all eyes will be on the Harbour Lights’ Tug of War team again, as they look to protect their place in the history books by avoiding the plunge.
The Harbour Carnival is organised every year by the Guernsey Round Table, a fundraising organisation that has been involved since the Carnival’s inception.
The event continues to raise money for important local causes, and this year’s fundraising will benefit Channel Island Air Search.
For 44 years, CI Air Search has been helping save lives around the islands’ coastlines and surrounding waters.
It has evolved and become more sophisticated since its launch in 1980 and with annual running costs of some £300,000, fundraising is essential to keep the "eyes in the sky" flying.
So, whether you’re standing on dry land watching the chaos, or risking a deep dive in the harbour, you’ll know your money is going to a good cause.
