Conrad Humphreys, the world-renowned sailor, has been spending time with the island’s young sailors.

Mr Humphreys was in the island to celebrate the Guernsey Sailing Trust’s 30thAnniversary, and took time out of his schedule to attend a specially organised session at the Trust for young people.

An experienced yachtsman, Mr Humphreys has sailed around the world three times and written a book: Inspiring Leadership: Staying Afloat in Turbulent Times, about the invaluable leadership lessons he learned from being the youngest skipper in history to win the BT Global Challenge, known as the World’s Toughest Yacht Race.

He was also the professional skipper in Channel 4’s popular TV documentary series ‘Mutiny’.

“It was a great morning and I was really pleased to meet so many enthusiastic young people all learning about sailing,” said Mr Humphreys. “The set up here at the Trust is fantastic and Guernsey is very fortunate to provide such a great opportunity for everyone to experience sailing, as it is a brilliant way to learn many skills that are beneficial to people’s lives like leadership, teamwork and self-reliance.”

Rich Klein, principal at the Guernsey Sailing Trust said: “Having Conrad visit us here at the Trust has been inspiring for our young sailors. He has given them a lot to think about in how sailing can have a positive impact, not just as a fun activity but also as a learning experience.”

The Guernsey Sailing Trust is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The Trust was established to provide the opportunity for all children in Guernsey to have the opportunity to experience sailing. Sessions are offered free of charge to all local States’ schools, and the Trust also offers after-school, activity week and summer courses, and courses for adults. Last year more than 2000 students visited the Trust to try sailing, powerboating and windsurfing.
