Specsavers’ Winter Wonderland tickets on sale. Celebrating 25 years. THE spirit of Christmas will return to St Saviour’s next month as plans for the Specsavers’ Winter Wonderland get underway.
After last year’s event had to be cancelled, Specsavers along with three charity partners are hoping 2022 will be the best yet, especially as it will be the 25th anniversary since it was first launched in 1996.
Taking place on Wednesday 7 December from 6pm to 8.30pm, the popular spectacle is expected to attract more than 3,000 visitors to the grounds of the Bachmann’s family home to view the festive lights.
Joys Events has taken on the major role of light design and displays this year. A new laser show coordinated by GLC Lighting has also been added to the line-up of entertainment, while the magical elf trail will make a return along with a special appearance from Father Christmas.
All money raised at the event will be split between the Lions Club of Guernsey, Cancer Research UK Guernsey branch and Autism Guernsey.
‘Having fun for a good cause makes everyone feel like a winner,’ says Paul Allaway, President of the Lions Club of Guernsey. ‘Adults who were small children when the event first launched back in 1996 are now bringing their children to enjoy the tradition. It’s a very special evening for everyone.’
Chair of the Cancer Research UK Guernsey branch, Bryan Lean, says: ‘This is a wonderful festive experience for families to enjoy, while also supporting our funded research to ensure “We Will Beat Cancer”.’
Autism Guernsey chair, Andrew Warren, says: 'This event plays an important part in the build up to the Christmas festivities. It is a wonderful way of combining the anticipation and excitement of the season with raising funds for three important local charities.'
A Christmas-themed marquee, sponsored by Skipton International, will be filled with a variety of stalls, including hot food and drinks, mince pies, a raffle and glow products for children. Festive music is also being provided by La Houguette School Choir and Saxometry.
Specsavers will be providing free buses from the company’s car park and to help ease congestion, especially around the La Villiaze area, members of the public will also be able to use Le Rondin School’s car park. Buses will run from 5.30pm from both venues shuttling people back and forth to the venue.
People are advised to bring a torch and car share where possible.
Co-founder Dame Mary Perkins says: ‘The event not only signals the start of Christmas for many islanders, but also raises essential funds for those in need at this time of year. We are delighted to be sponsoring it again and we hope it brings some much-needed enjoyment and magic to the island community.’
