Are you passionate about making a difference? The Youth Commission and Home-Start need you!
In 2021, Home-Start and the Youth Commission joined forces and they are now looking for people who are interested in supporting both young people and families in Guernsey.
The volunteering opportunities we currently have on offer are Mentors who support young people aged 11 – 18 on a one-to-one basis; and Home-Visiting volunteers who support families with children under 7 years old.
Mentoring Volunteers at the Youth Commission are carefully matched with a young person who has been referred to the service for various reasons. It may be that they are feeling anxious, have low self-esteem or want support in getting involved in positive activities. The Mentor sees the young person weekly, on a one-to-one basis working on specific goals using skills and strategies they have learnt in training.
As a Home-Visiting volunteer with Home-Start you would visit the family at their home, once a week for a couple of hours. Volunteers support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. Simple things make a big difference; listening, getting out of the house, or helping sort a problem a parent can’t face alone.
Anyone can volunteer! Volunteers are not required to have any previous training; we are simply looking for individuals who are passionate about building trusting relationships and providing an effective, needs driven service that makes a real difference to the lives of children, young people and their families.
The recruitment, induction, training and support of all our volunteers is really important. Volunteers will be given bespoke training that is appropriate to their role; such as Child Protection and Active Listening skills. will also be offered great opportunities for future training and networking with other like minded people.

Please note that the Volunteer Training will take please on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April.
