Paul Reas is one of the most significant photographers to emerge from the new wave of British colour documentary of the mid-1980s. He is part of a pioneering generation of photographers, that included Paul Graham, Martin Parr and Anna Fox, who revealed and critiqued British class and culture. Reas has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and his work is held in private and public collections.

Fables of Faubus tells the story of the British working class in 6 distinct chapters. Reas describes the work as focusing on “the years of decline of industry and the fall out from that, communities being de-centred and levelled”. But behind the layers of detail in each photograph lies the story of Reas’s own journey through photography.

The exhibition uncovers how the various personal and commercial projects Reas has worked on have gradually shaped his artistic vision over the years.

Paul Reas has exhibited his work in galleries including; The Photographers Gallery, The London College of Communication and the Impressions Gallery in Bradford.

A special ‘in conversation’ talk with Paul Reas will be held at Guernsey Museum at Candie on Thursday 3rd October at 6pm. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.com.

Fables of Faubus by Paul Reas is open from Friday 4th October – 31st December 2024 at Guernsey Museum at Candie.

Jessica Bernard is a London based artist. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she is a recipient of the New Talent award from the Photographers’ Gallery.

Her current body of work, Team Building, considers her father’s experience of workplace bullying and subsequent development of schizophrenia, by examining the notion of corporate team building. The work explores the multiple versions of self we are forced to encounter within the workplace and creates a physical manifestation of her father’s disorientation at this time.

Team Building by Jessica Bernard is open Friday 4th October - 3rd November 2024 in the Greenhouse Gallery at Guernsey Museum at Candie.

Of both exhibitions, Curator and Artistic Director of the Guernsey Photography Festival Jean-Christophe Godet said; “We are honoured that for each edition of the festival, a host of talented artists such as Paul Reas and Jessica Bernard have responded with so much enthusiasm and excitement to our invitation to take part. GPF’s strong artistic identity and vision for the cultural sector in Guernsey continues to attract major local and international organisations and individuals and we are delighted to present such a creative and stimulating programme for 2024. Thank you to the Guernsey Museums and Guernsey Arts for their continuous support in our project”

Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services for Guernsey Museums said, “Guernsey Museums has worked with the Guernsey Photography Festival for many years, showcasing the work of foremost contemporary photographers such as Mark Power, Martin Parr, Anastasia Samoylova and Siân Davey in the Brian White Gallery.

This year we are proud to be showing images by leading social documentary photographer, Paul Reas, in a retrospective exhibition that spans three decades of work - Fables of Faubus. It is all change at the Museum this month as this show also opens alongside Team Building by Jessica Bernard and our latest Foyer display, Bailiwick Banknotes, giving visitors three new reasons to visit this autumn.”

Russ Fossey, Head of Arts and Development for Guernsey Arts said, “Guernsey Arts has a long association with the festival, as a sponsor of the festival and in hosting exhibiting international artists within our Greenhouse Gallery. This year we are delighted to be welcoming Jessica Bernard to the gallery.”

Guernsey Museums Foyer Display – Bailiwick Banknotes

In the Guernsey Museum Foyer will be a new display of Bailiwick Banknotes produced in partnership with the States of Guernsey Treasury Department. Assistant Curator, Kit Hughes said: “ The Bailiwick Banknote display is a great opportunity to dive into the history and evolution of the paper money issued by the States of Guernsey. You can learn about the designs, content and production of the notes that have become synonymous with our island identity. ”

The Bailiwick Banknotes display is showing from the Friday 4th October – 31st December 2024 at Guernsey Museum at Candie.
