Six students from Ladies and Elizabeth College gained first-hand experience of a career in medicine during the Medical Specialist Group’s Taste of Medicine course, which was run from 5 to 9 June.

Taste of Medicine will be run again in July, this time for students from the Sixth Form Centre.

The course, which has run for several years, is led by Dr Clare Betteridge, consultant paediatrician, and is designed to offer students a taste of what a career in medicine looks like for those considering working in the profession.

During the week students are paired up and can shadow ten different clinical sessions, including ear, nose and throat (ENT), ophthalmology, orthopaedics, dermatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, various theatre lists, diabetes, emergency medicine, paediatrics, breast clinic and ICU.

Dr Steve Evans, Chair of the MSG says, ‘It’s been a real pleasure having these students shadow us over the week. The feedback from students in the past is that this course is invaluable and the benefits will be felt for many years to come. The MSG is committed to supporting students in their pursuit of a career in medicine, and maybe some will return to Guernsey as specialists and GPs in the future.’

Reflecting on his week on the course, Charlie Dunford said, ‘This truly was an amazing week and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I’m interested in a career in medicine and wanted an insight into the day-to-day life of a consultant. ‘My favourite part of the course was watching the operations, specifically the ENT operations. I learnt many interesting things throughout, but by far the most memorable was learning how an MRI scanner works. This course has confirmed my passion for medicine, and I will be applying to medical school this October. This week has been extremely rewarding and I am very grateful for the opportunity.’

TJ Carré said, ‘The Taste of Medicine course was an amazing experience which gave me valuable insights into the amount of work that goes into effectively caring for patients. It gave me the opportunity to speak to many different people in different professions, and learn a huge amount about, not only the roles themselves, but also the lifestyles associated with those roles. It is a brilliant course that has helped me meet many new people, and learn many new things.’

Lily Bercham said, ‘Taste of medicine was an amazing and really insightful experience for me and has really inspired me to continue working towards a career in healthcare!’

Dr Clare Betteridge said, ‘We thoroughly enjoyed hosting the students this year. They were all motivated and enthusiastic and a pleasure to teach. We wish them all the best in their future careers and look forward to welcoming the Sixth Form students for the second Taste of Medicine course in July.
