Sure has rolled out a filtering system to block access to illegal content across its broadband and mobile networks in Guernsey.

The local telecoms operator is the first to use a filtering solution across both its broadband and mobile platforms in the island. The system complies with the UK industry standard to ensure the highest level of protection for customers.

Nominum, the world’s leading provider of integrated subscriber, network and security solutions, has supplied the system which has been rolled out across Sure’s entire network including Jersey and the Isle of Man.

The system has a number of security benefits for customers including the ability to block sites identified by the Internet Watch Foundation as containing illegal content. It will also prevent customer equipment that has been compromised by viruses and malware from contacting known botnet controllers which will help prevent customers’ computers from being remotely controlled by hackers.

During the implementation of the new system the caching Domain Name Server (DNS) platform, which is essential for all internet use, was also updated to guarantee the highest levels of security, resilience and capacity on the networks.

Eddie Saints, CEO of Sure in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, said: “The security of our customers while online is extremely important. The implementation of an illegal content filtering system which meets both the UK telecoms industry’s stringent standards and industry best practice has been a priority for Sure so I’m pleased that the roll out has been completed successfully.

“The launch of the filtering system across the whole network has involved a significant financial investment which will ensure the highest level of protection for our customers.

“This system will allow us as an island to be better online citizens by preventing hackers from accessing the local network and controlling customers’ resources through viruses and malware.”
