Around 80 Guernsey residents who took part in a recent Startup Guernsey Entrepreneur Survey conducted by Island Global Research are considering starting their own business.

There were just short of 500 responses to the survey and 18 per cent of them indicated that they were thinking about starting a business.

31 per cent of Startup Guernsey respondents were interested in providing help, mentoring or advice to new startups, while 80 per cent of Startup Guernsey clients wanted to receive expert support such as access to angel investors, marketing or business plan development.

Tony Brassell of Startup Guernsey said: “This feedback is an encouraging indication that there is no let-up in the number of ambitious Guernsey residents who are considering going into business. This wasn’t really surprising as we were consulted by 197 individuals in 2014.

“We will be using the information gathered through the survey to help shape the services and support we provide to our clients and we remain open to suggestions on how we can improve on what we do.

”We are grateful to the people who took the time to respond and to Island Global Research for sponsoring our survey.”

The creative and IT services sector was well-represented by respondents and there was strong interest in Startup Guernsey’s learning initiatives such as mentoring, networking, and coaching in financial and business skills and tax issues.

More than half of those who responded were self-employed, with almost half Startup Guernsey clients having one to five employees. The survey revealed a preference for Startup Guernsey events and meetings outside of working hours, favouring inspirational talks, technical briefings and networking.

84 per cent of Startup Guernsey clients have clients or customers in Guernsey while 43 per cent have clients in the UK, 27 per cent in Jersey and 27 per cent in other parts of the world.

In the UK the national enterprise campaign Startup Britain reports that 600,000 new businesses will be started in 2015, 100,000 more than last year.
