NINE community projects have been selected to receive a portion of funds raised by the around the island Saffery Champness Rotary Walk which takes place next month.

This is the most charities ever to be selected by the committee in the history of the Walk.

The selected projects for 2014 are:

• Autism Guernsey - starter packs for its Independent Living Scheme
• Cardiac Action Group - a treadmill to support the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme
• CLIC Sargent Guernsey - purchase of Acaris volumetric IV pump
• Guernsey Bereavement Services - audio visual presentation equipment
• Guernsey Cancer Support - purchase of 100 gift bags
• Headway Guernsey - to launch a new series of modules
• Guernsey Neurological Concern Society - a specialised wheelchair
• Trinity Church - laptop computer to support the service
• Vale Primary School PTA - secure bike sheds

David Mortimer, chairman of the walk’s organising committee said: “We received 28 applications for our review this year, which is a record number. Because many of these were relatively small projects, the committee unanimously agreed it would be lovely to be able to support a few more than normal this year.

“What we really need now are walkers to sign up and begin fundraising to avoid disappointing these charities. Sadly it looks as if numbers this year are likely to be slightly down but I would like to urge islanders and visitors to the island that there is still plenty of time to register for the walk. You don’t need to register to complete the whole 39 miles, you can do as little or as much as you wish.”

Previously known as the Itex Walk, this is one of Guernsey’s largest charity fundraising events that helps to raise vital funds for a range of local charities and community projects.

The Walk takes place on Saturday 7 June. Any one keen to register can do so online before 1 June by logging onto the Saffery Champness Rotary Walk website: www.scrwalk.org.gg.
