Following a successful year of recruitment in 2017, islanders are being offered the chance to find out more about a career with the Guernsey Police at a Police Constables Open Evening tomorrow (Tuesday 15th May).
Representatives from the Bomb Disposal Unit, Neighbourhood Policing Team and the Firearms Team will all be on hand to demonstrate and talk about the work they do in each of their specialist areas. The Roads Policing Unit will also be showcasing their ‘beer goggles’ which simulate how difficult it is to focus and carry out tasks when your vision is impaired through alcohol.
Scenes of crime officers will be offering a hands-on chance to carry out some of the techniques used to gather forensic evidence, including fingerprint recovery, and representatives from JESCC will also be on hand to talk about the work they do within the joint control centre.
Current Student Officers and Special Constables will be in attendance to give their perspective on their experiences and training, while the island’s Civil Protection Volunteers will be manning a static display of the equipment and resources they use to carry out their important supporting role for all emergency services in Guernsey.
Learning and Development Manager for Law Enforcement, Jim Bell said:
‘While the Guernsey Police force is smaller than most, there are plenty of opportunities to progress, specialise and develop, as people will see when they experience the range of different specialisms we will be showcasing tomorrow night. Having enjoyed 30 years working within the Police service I can safely say no two days are the same. The camaraderie and team ethos are second to none and the community impact you provide makes everything worthwhile. If you want to be part of the future of Policing in the Bailiwick, come and have a chat with the teams tomorrow night.’
The open evening takes place at Elizabeth College on Tuesday night between 6 and 7pm. There will be a number of static displays on the tennis courts opposite the main building and more stalls and information within the Grand Hall. Parking is available at the Odeon Car Park.
The next intake of Police Constables will take place in September 2018.
