More than a thousand Islanders took to the ice during the first week of Sure Skate which opened on 1 December.

"We expected the first few days to be reasonably quiet with the children still at school but it’s been great to see them coming afterwards and to see a number of companies and groups, such as Scouts and Brownies, using it in the evenings," said Alex Bridle, managing director of The Guernsey Event Company, which is organising the event on behalf of Sure.

"As well as the corporate bookings, we have schools, a swimming club, Cubs and Scouts, Brownies and Guides as well as groups such as the Adult Disability Day Service, the National Autistic Society and The Croft. Sure Skate is appealing to every part of the community and adding something special to the festive season."

The 20m x 15m rink, which is made of synthetic ice, will be at Le Friquet until 4 January and tickets, which cost £5 for a 45 minute session, can be bought at Le Friquet.

"The feedback so far has been really positive with people saying that although it is synthetic ice, it gives a very similar experience to skating on frozen water (ice) but it isn’t as cold if you fall over. The team at Ice Magic, which is running the rink, have many years of international experience, are extremely friendly and responsible and I’m pleased to say that so far only one plaster has been needed," said Mrs Bridle.
