A donation of £5000 from the masons of Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship will help fund St John Badgers and Cadets from Guernsey who are taking part in the National St John Youth Camp in the summer.

The St John Youth Camp takes place in Oxfordshire and will bring together hundreds of Cadets and Badgers from across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Germany as well the Channel Islands. The week-long event will allow the young people to develop teamwork, leadership and communications skills, alongside their foundation in first aid, through a programme of activities and adventures.

The cost of the trip is being met through a combination of sponsorship, fundraising and parental/family contributions.

Heather Langlois, Chief Executive Officer of the St John Guernsey charity said: ”We are incredibly grateful to the members of Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship for their £5,000 donation to our youth programme. Events like the youth camp give our young people the opportunity to build relationships with St John Badgers and Cadets from other parts of the UK and Europe, which in turn helps to build confidence and interpersonal skills. Many of our young people will go on to become healthcare professionals and business leaders of the future, so opportunities like these not only enrich their lives, but also provide them with the skills and experiences to help them succeed in achieving their dreams. We could not be more grateful for the kindness and generosity of the Doyle’s Masonic Lodge of Fellowship.”

The donation from the Masons will help subsidise the summer trip, but the St John Guernsey charity is still looking for donations and sponsorship to help cover other aspects of the national youth camp, and other off-island opportunities and activities.

Mrs Langlois added: “As part of a national and international organisation there are lots of opportunities for our young people to attend training, forums and award ceremonies in the UK, however being from Guernsey, we have the added cost of transport, which can potentially be prohibitive. We would welcome support from any individuals or businesses who would like to join the Masons in helping to fund these activities.”

Charles Tracy, the Worshipful Master of Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship will present the cheque to the charity on Tuesday 6th February at 17:00hrs at the Rohais. Representatives of the Badgers and Cadets, and volunteer youth leaders will also be present.

Mr Tracy, commented : ”We are delighted that the donation from our Lodge is being ear-marked for such an important initiative. Masons are very conscious of the importance of charitable giving. We welcome, in particular, the opportunity to encourage young members of the Community in engage in local voluntary activities such as those offered by St John. This year the Members of Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship are donating £20,000 to a variety of local Charities. This is in addition to the Lodge’s contribution to the generous donations of over £60,000 already made to local Charities by the Masonic Province of Guernsey and Alderney.”

St John Guernsey provides a youth programme of Cadets and Badgers. Badgers is for 5-10 year olds who learn basic first aid, take part in team games and activities, get creative with arts and crafts, find out how the body works and how to stay healthy and helping their local community.

Cadets is for 10 to 18-year-olds and helps young people to develop more first aid skills, as well as, develop personal skills, such as teamwork, leadership and communication. They take part in fundraising for St John Guernsey and other charities and complete awards such as the Grand Prior Award.

Older Cadets are also able to accompany adult volunteers on first aid event duty to gain experience providing care and treatment for the people at public events.
