The Lloyds Bank Foundation has contributed £30,000.00 towards supporting the role of Guernsey’s specialist uro-oncology nurse, which was secured by Male Uprising Guernsey earlier this year.
The significant contribution, which is spread over three years, is an important step towards the charity’s fundraising goal and was awarded by the Lloyds Bank Foundation in response to the charity’s application.
The role of the Uro-Oncology Nurse, which has been filled by Pierre Hervé, includes helping male urological patients who are undergoing treatment for bladder, prostate and kidney cancers. Patients now have access to the specialist nurse through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery stages of their cancer care. This includes the provision of information and support as well as specialised nursing care in the form of assessment and treatments.
The Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands is one of the largest sources of charitable funding in the islands, dispensing almost £1 million a year in the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey. It derives its funding entirely from Lloyds Banking Group but is legally independent of the Lloyds Group and an independent board of trustees determines the policies. The Foundation recently entered into a new covenant to provide long-term continuity of financial support.
The funding for the uro-oncology post is made through HSSD and the total cost over three years amounts to around £130,000.00. MUG has raised considerable funds to secure the post and the contribution from the Foundation has been gratefully accepted by the charity. ‘The contribution from the Lloyds Bank Foundation is significant for two reasons,’ stated MUG founder, Trevor Kelham. ‘We feel it is a powerful endorsement of the work we are doing to provide Guernsey with the specialist cancer nurse and their generous contribution has boosted our funds significantly. We are very grateful for their support.’
The Chairman of the local foundation is John Boothman and the Deputy Chairman is Jurat Dr John Ferguson. The Executive Director is John Hutchins.
Mr Hutchins said: ‘We welcomed the chance to assist with this new and very focused charity.”
