The Ladies' College Melrose School Council pupils embarked on a memorable visit to the GSPCA this week, bringing with them not just smiles and enthusiasm, but also an array of wish list items for the animals and a cheque for £810.22.

The donation was the result of a school-wide fundraising effort spearheaded by the ideas and actions of pupils themselves at the College, from Pre-School to Year 6.

The fundraising initiatives included a harvest festival for animal items, an animal biscuit bake-off, and a day filled with animal-themed activities. Among the pupils' favourite events were the Serengeti staff sprint race, a visit from the Principal, Daniele Harford-Fox’s, dog Roxy and an outdoor shared reading session of animal books.

The College's onsite field was transformed into an animal-inspired obstacle course, with participation from all pupils and animal mascots.

In a celebration of milestones, both The Ladies' College and the GSPCA recently marked their 150th anniversaries. The funds were presented by Lottie, the Lead School Councillor, to Steve Byrne, Manager at the GSPCA.

Jane Lavin, School Council Link Teacher, said: ‘It has been incredibly rewarding to witness the dedication and enthusiasm of our School Council pupils, we have class representatives from Years 1 through to Year 6. These Melrose pupils were thrilled to see the contributions made by the whole school community in action, with donated items already being used to feed hedgehogs and clean the seal area at the GSPCA.

‘Their commitment to making a difference in the lives of animals, and the support from the entire Melrose community, highlights the compassionate spirit of kindness we strive to cultivate at The Ladies' College.’

Steve showed the pupils how the donated funds would be utilised with upcoming projects such as the construction of a new wildlife hospital and a ferret centre.

Hilda the Tortoise and Billy Barnacle the Turtle also captivated the young visitors, who were inspired by the animals and the impactful work of the GSPCA.

Steve Byrne, Manager at the GSPCA, said: ‘We are grateful for the generous donation and the incredible efforts of the pupils at Melrose. Their enthusiasm and hard work have made a significant impact, and it’s heart warming to see such young members of our community dedicated to animal welfare.’
