An ABBA and 70s tribute evening, sponsored by Investec Private Banking, raised enough money to cover the cost of employing a project worker at a young people’s support service for ten months.

The themed evening, featuring ABBA Sensation – one of the UK’s leading ABBA tribute bands – raised £19,500 for the charity Young People Guernsey (YPG) which runs The HUB, a support service for children and young people.

Jane St Pier, chair of YPG, said this was the most successful musical fundraising event yet.

‘It was a tremendously exuberant night and we are extremely grateful to all those that supported us: the donors of magnificent auction prizes, those who attended the sold out event in such wonderful costumes, and particularly Investec Private Banking who provided the sponsorship that made the evening possible,’ she said.

‘This is our third year of sponsorship from Investec and we recognise the significant commitment that they have made to our organisation to ensure that we can hold fundraising events. The magnificent total of £19,500 will provide 10 months of a fulltime specialist project worker at The HUB. Our staff and volunteers are our greatest asset, and 10 months will provide vital support to young people who need information, advice and essential listening support.’

Stephen Henry, head of Investec Private Banking in the Channel Islands, said the bank was delighted to be able to make such a difference to the charity.

‘It never fails to amaze us how hard YPG works and the positive effect it has on the young people in the island. The project worker’s job is extremely busy and varied, from listening to and providing practical help to youngsters to attending meetings in schools and with other key agencies. It is very rewarding to see that we are able to help that continue,’ said Mr Henry.

YPG is a Guernsey charity established in 2011 to identify and respond to the needs of young people in the Bailiwick, particularly those at risk. In March 2012 the organisation signed a deal with the UK charity Barnado’s to open an information, advice and guidance centre, which is now two years old.

YPG receives no States funding, and finances The HUB through seeking corporate and philanthropic support, securing charitable grants and holding fundraising events.
