Guernsey’s first LGBTQ+ climbing taster session takes place later this month. The event, organised by Climb LBG & Liberate aims to be as inclusive as possible with all ages, abilities and fitness levels welcome.
It’s amazing to be able to offer the diverse range of activities that we do here at Liberate. All thanks to the incredible organisations that volunteer their services for us”, explains Ellie Jones, CEO of Liberate.
Liberate member Michael Ellis who took up climbing just two years ago and recently took part in the Queer Climbing Festival in the Peak District, is behind the initiative.
“I started climbing less than two years ago – but it has done so much for me already. In addition to being part of the LGBTQ+ community, I also am registered blind and autistic. For someone like me to not only be able to access this, but to grow as a person through it, is incredible” says Michael. “As a result, I have had the chance to compete at a national para-climbing competition, a sport climb in Spain and regularly climb indoors and outdoors right here in Guernsey. I do climb in inclusive spaces and also mainstream clubs and with individuals. All of these things are great at a personal level, but it is also great when people want to work together and the ‘usual barriers’ are overcome”.
The event will be held at Le Murier School on Monday 26 June from 6 till 7.30pm and is part of the Liberate OUT group, which is a monthly social group for LGBTQ+ people and friends to socialise together around a specific activity. Absolutely no experience is required and it is disability-friendly and open to people of all fitness levels. Any specialist climbing equipment will be provided. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing that they can easily move in.
The taster session is open to the LGBTQ+ community and allies and is completely free, but spaces are limited, so please register to get your place at the following link: www.liberate.gg/book/
