Dementia Friendly Guernsey are excited to announce Guernsey’s first Dementia Friendly Festival to be held at Saumarez Park from midday to 4pm on Saturday 9th September

An inaugural dementia friendly music festival will be taking place in National Trust Folk and Costume Courtyard at Saumarez Park on Saturday 9th September 2023.

The Dementia Friendly Guernsey are presenting a festival of relaxed musical performances from 12.00 to 16.30 and hope that the festival will provide a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable space for people living with dementia and their carers to share music together.

There will be performances from JoJan, Singing from the Heart Community Choir, Aindre Reece-Sheerin, The Button Pushers and GU 10

Food and refreshments will be available to purchase. Parking will be at Home Farm with drop off available at the Folk Museum by prior arrangement.

Guy Mitchell, Organiser of the Festival and a trustee of Dementia Friendly Guernsey tells us what to expect “The event is about dementia friendly performances that are designed for people living with dementia to enjoy with their families, friends and carers. The performance includes small changes to create a more comfortable environment. Members of the audience are welcome to come and go during the show, we'll reduce the volume for a more relaxed atmosphere. The National Trust courtyard offers us a lovely space to host the event where you can visit the Folk and Costume museum and reminisce of days gone by.

Julie Bulpitt, Coordinator and trustee added “we are especially pleased to be working with the National Trust of Guernsey who are making their Folk and Costume Museum available to us for the afternoon and to Highfield House Care Home for their generous sponsorship of the costs allowing us to make this a free event for those living with dementia, their families and carers. A extra special thank you to the fabulous acts that will be entertaining us”

The capacity of the Courtyard is limited and tickets are expected to go quickly and can be booked via Eventbrite https://bit.ly/dementia-festival23.

Dementia Friendly Guernsey was established in order to raise awareness of dementia in the community and to find ways to improve the quality of life for those who live in Guernsey or visit our island and who have dementia. Best known for their popular dementia awareness sessions that provide a basic understanding of dementia, what it is like for those living with the condition and five simple steps we can all take to make it a little better.

Recent activities have included regular Boogie in the Bar afternoons, a cruise around Herm, reminiscence Town tour on Le Petit Train and supporting activity co-ordinators in care homes.
