Following the success of its inaugural Insurance Linked Securities Insight in Zurich last year, Guernsey Finance is hosting a follow up event in March at the British Museum in London.

The event, ILS Insight London, will include two panel sessions featuring Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) experts from Guernsey, the UK and mainland Europe.

An introduction will be provided by Dominic Wheatley, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the Island’s finance industry.

“Having only taken over as Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance at the start of December, I was in a position to attend the first ILS event in Zurich as a delegate and therefore gained a terrific insight into how the masterclass was received from an audience perspective,” said Mr Wheatley.

“As a thought leadership event the Zurich Masterclass provided a valuable understanding of the ILS asset class, as well as answering some of the key issues facing this growing area. Our London event, which has attracted some of the industry’s leading players to appear as panellists, will look to build on this informative and engaging approach.”

The first panel session will focus on structural innovation, with a particular focus on the effects of cross-border regulations and structuring opportunities. Moderated by Kate Storey of Appleby, the panel will consist of Christopher Bell of GBF Legal; Mark Helyar of Bedell Cristin; Nick Bugler of Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP; and Caroline Bradley from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission.

The second panel session will look specifically at Guernsey as an ILS jurisdiction and concentrate on the continued growth of collateralised reinsurance, longevity risk and the use of cat bonds. Moderated by Clive James of Kane, the panel will consist of Justin Wallen of Robus; Stewart McLaughlin of Willis; John Rowson of Aon; Matt Wilmington of Aon Hewitt; and David Reeves of Barbican.

Mr Wheatley said: “Guernsey’s track record in both the investment funds and insurance sectors has enabled the Island to become a specialist centre for ILS. Our hybrid proposition allows us to provide Protected Cell Companies and Incorporated Cell Companies for reinsurance vehicles as well as a number of flexible fund structures to facilitate investment in ILS. These factors, combined with our close proximity to London and respected regulatory framework, underpin our position as a leading ILS domicile.

“By hosting this event, we are looking to share our knowledge and explain why the ILS sector continues to grow and evolve from what was regarded as a niche market to one that is a recognised, independent asset class.”

Latest figures show that the Guernsey regulator licensed 85 new international insurance entities during 2014, meaning there was a total of 797 international insurance entities domiciled in the Island at the end of 2014. Further data shows that ILS was responsible for 45% of the new business last year.

‘ILS Insight London’, which is free to attend, takes place from 4pm and is followed by a drinks reception at 6pm. The event is supported by news and analysis specialist Artemis.bm. Event sponsors are Appleby, Bedell Cristin, Kane and Robus.

The event is intended to appeal to those involved with the insurance and reinsurance sectors, investment banks, alternative investment funds and regulation.
