Guernsey Rugby Association (GRA) has launched a summer rugby camp aimed at helping young players develop their rugby skills during the school holidays.

The camp, sponsored by Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, will run from 17 - 21 August and includes training sessions for all levels of experience under the guidance of experienced coach and Guernsey Rugby Development Officer, Steve Melbourne and the Guernsey Rugby Development Team.

Sessions will take place at KGV from Monday to Thursday with the Tots (U6) training from 9am-10am, U7s through to U11s from 9am-12pm and the U12s through to Colts between 1pm-4pm.

Children in the afternoon group will also receive sessions on nutrition, strength and conditioning as well as athletics training.

The week will end with games for each age group on Friday at the Garenne Stand, Footes Lane followed by a BBQ. The island team will be playing at the stand later that evening, taking on Championship League side the Cornish Pirates.

A place on the camp costs £50 per child for the week, while booking for two children costs £90 and for three children £120. This includes a t-shirt, rugby ball, cap and a BBQ lunch on the Friday.

Mr Melbourne MBE was appointed to the role of rugby development officer in 2013 with the aim to boost interest in rugby in the island. He has previously organised and delivered coaching courses for the Royal Navy Rugby Union and is a mentor for the Rugby Football Union Leadership Academy.

“This is a great chance for children to enhance their rugby skills over the summer and meet young players at all different levels. The camp is open to all children even if they haven’t played rugby before as it is a great introduction to the game. I hope they enjoy what is sure to be a fun week of training and activities and I would like to thank Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management for their continuing support,” he said.

Andy Finch, head of wealth management at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, said: “We are pleased to support an event which invests in the future of rugby in the island. It’s vital that we have programmes such as this to generate more interest in the sport and promote a healthy lifestyle amongst our young islanders.”

Registration forms are available at www.academyrugby.com and must be returned to the Steve Melbourne, Guernsey Sport Commission, The Coach House, Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, Amherst, GY1 2DL.
