The Guernsey Cheshire Home has been named as the beneficiary charity of the 2015 Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon and Relay Races.
The charity provides long term residential, day and respite care for people with serious physical disabilities such as MS, spinal injuries, strokes and MND. They currently have 11 permanent residents and offer a range of respite services allowing carers to have a break.
The annual event, which will take place on Sunday 30 August, takes runners through all 10 parishes and along some of the island’s most scenic roads and lanes. It has become a key part of the island’s sporting calendar and attracts competitors from around the world.
Entry is open to all abilities and the organisers welcome everyone from first timers to serious club runners. Those not wishing to tackle the marathon alone can enter as a relay team of two or five and compete on behalf of a business, charity or club. Competitors can secure their place at the starting line by registering online or by post.
Alex Jenner from the Guernsey Cheshire Home said: “We are very grateful to Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management and the Guernsey Marathon organisers for choosing the Guernsey Cheshire Home to benefit from this year’s event. The Home is self-funded so all monies raised will be put to good use to help towards general running costs. It is only with support, such as this, that we can ensure that our residents and day visitors can enjoy as much independence as possible, to make their own choices and maintain control of their lives.”
Race director, Peter Head, said: “The Guernsey Cheshire Home is an extremely worthy local charity and we’re very pleased to be supporting them at this year’s marathon. The Home does such fantastic work providing care and support for adults living with severe physical disabilities in the island so we hope to raise a fitting amount to support them.”
