A public event to celebrate Guernesiais, to raise awareness of Guernsey’s officially recognised language and to promote the work of the Guernsey Language Commission will be held on Saturday 10th February at St Martins Community Centre.

Everyone who has an interest in discovering more about Guernesiais is welcome, whether or not they can speak the language.

The event will demonstrate how Guernesiais is used today. A number of artisan stalls and organisations who use our language in their products or businesses on a regular basis will have their goods on display at the event.

Anyone who is interested in learning the language, whether as a beginner or to improve their fluency or with an interest in attending events where Guernesiais might be spoken or to meet others with a similar interest is welcome to come along.

Sir Richard Collas, the Chairman of the Guernsey Language Commission, says “the importance of Guernesiais in the culture of our island was recognised by the States when they voted to establish the Guernsey Language Commission and to adopt Guernesiais as an official language. The aim of the event is to promote the use of Guernesiais and to inform the public of the existence of the Commission, its objectives and how it is working towards achieving its goals. The revival of the language is of necessity a long-term project, the success of which can only be achieved by ensuring that as many people as possible understand the importance of our own unique language, its relevance today and the benefits which it might bring to our community and to each of us individually”.

We very much consider Guernesiais to be a link to our past and a bridge to our future.

We look forward to welcoming everyone on 10th February at St Martins Community Centre between 2PM and 4PM.
