Colette Merrien has been appointed as Girlguiding Guernsey’s new Bailiwick Commissioner. Colette has taken over from Sally Carmichael whose 5 year term of office came to an end in January. Colette is responsible for the whole membership of Girlguiding in Guernsey and with her team ensures that quality guiding is delivered on the island.
Colette has been a member of Girlguiding since she was a Brownie and she now runs a very successful Rainbow unit and is an assistant Guide leader. She has been an adviser supporting other Rainbow leaders and supports young women undertaking their Queens Guide award. For the last five years she has been the District Commissioner for units in the north of the island and has been a member of the island executive team which manages Guiding locally. All her family are involved in Guiding and she was a very popular choice for the position.
Colette says “It was an honour to be asked to take on the role as Bailiwick Commissioner and I am really looking forward to working with all our volunteers, girls and young women and hope to visit as many units as I can. We want to continue to take Girlguiding forward ensuring that our leaders feel supported and our girls can participate in a whole range of fun and exciting activities. We are already planning an activity day on guiding around the world later this year, an island event to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee as well as planting trees for the Queen’s Green Canopy. One of my priorities is to increase our membership so if anyone would like to know more about volunteering with us or would like their daughter to join please visit our website www.girlguiding.org.gg”
Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the British Isles giving girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. We build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good. We give them a space to have fun. We run Rainbows (5–7 years), Brownies (7–10 years), Guides (10–14 years) and Rangers (14–18 years).
