It’s almost that time of year again - oh yes it is! - as GADOC’s 66th annual Christmas pantomime, Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood, heads into its final weeks of rehearsal before the production moves to Beau Sejour theatre in December.
Packed with vibrant characters to cheer and jeer, a wealth of laugh-out-loud comedy and punchy musical numbers that will have all the family bopping in their seats, this legendary tale of heroes and villains, rebels and rogues gets a new lease of life with local talent on the boards and behind the scenes.
Director Dani Robin says, “The Robin Hood legend lends itself so brilliantly to the traditional elements of pantomime because it is at its core about good versus evil. There is plenty of opportunity for the audience to cheer on the heroes and boo the villains throughout the story, and combined with the Babes in the Wood folktale there’s more at stake for Robin and company.”
Despite being set in medieval Nottingham, there will of course be local references and nods to modern pop culture.
“There are some surprises in store that have brought a lot of fun and laughter to the rehearsal room,” Dani says. “Everyone is putting so much time and energy into all facets of the show, from the actors learning lines and dances to costumers, builders, choreographers and musicians pouring hours into ensuring everything and everyone on stage look and sound awesome. It’s all voluntary and a labour of love. We really want Robin and his merry men to make this a very merry Christmas for everyone who comes to watch.”
Written by Alan P Frayn, Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood will run from Saturday 21 Dec – Saturday 4 January with fourteen performances.
