Hot on the heels of its recent and very successful West End revival, GADOC is bringing the glamorous classic 'Guys and Dolls' to Guernsey audiences this spring!

From the dicey streets of 1950s New York City to smouldering Havana nights, this timelessly vibrant show follows the high-stakes lives, loves and lies of a pair of big city gamblers and the dolls who want to tame them. Hailed as the perfect rom-com musical and packed with big brassy showtunes such as ‘Luck Be a Lady’, ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat’ and the hilarious ‘Adelaide’s Lament', this show promises to sweep audiences off their feet.

Director Lisa Johnston said: “Guys and Dolls is an absolute classic and the current revival is testament to its ongoing popularity. The collaboration in the rehearsal room has been so exciting, with our talented cast making characters their own. The vocals are demanding but the cast, many of whom are professionally trained, have them nailed. Combine all this with amazing costumes, choreography and a fabulous set design - and you have one very happy and proud director!”

Choreographers Catherine and Brian Webster bring their wealth of West End experience to the show and have embraced the challenge of creating eye-catching dances that compliment the storytelling: “The songs in this show are amazing and the choreography is jam-packed alongside the story, with one of the numbers being nine minutes long!” says Catherine. “It’s taken a lot of preparation to make sure the story continues to be told within the number as well as entertaining the audience with some great choreography.”

As with any big theatre production, particularly one set in a bygone era, a lot of time and care has gone into making the cast look the part. Costume coordinator Dany Adams started preparations over a year ago: “I start with researching other productions and then the era, 1950s this time, which is a lovely period to costume - sharp suits for men and elegant silhouettes for women,” she says. “This production will have about 120 costumes. The most challenging scene has been the one set in Havana; the number is nine minutes long so needs to make an impact! Expect a riot of colour!” GADOC last staged Guys and Dolls twenty five years ago. The show will run for eight performances from Saturday 30th March to Saturday 6th April.

Synopsis

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, Guys And Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend, nightclub performer Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, but Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown. Guys And Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.
