Digital literary world alive in Guernsey

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

Visitors to the 2014 Guernsey Literary Festival will this year enjoy a full programme of literary events, speakers and educational initiatives, and will also have the opportunity to experience the latest developments in digital publishing thanks to technical sponsor JT.

Throughout the festival, which takes place from Friday 15th May to Monday 18th May, JT will be providing free WiFi access throughout Market Square and within the festival Hub on Market Terrace. Organisers hope that the free WiFi access will encourage interaction through social networking around the events and by enabling attendees to explore the many ways in which stories and poetry can be shared and experienced.

Between 10am and 4pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, JT will also be hosting a tented area where staff and local school children will be offering e-book demonstrations on tablet devices to showcase the latest advances in digital publishing. This is an opportunity to learn how to upload a book to a tablet device, see how e books are presented and gain a better understanding of what digital publishing is all about.

Tamara O’Brien, Deputy Managing Director, JT (Guernsey) said: “We are delighted to support The Guernsey Literary Festival by providing the technology to encourage interaction and open up the digital literary world for visitors to the Festival Hub. We are also pleased to offer local school children the chance to share their knowledge of technology to enable festival goers to see just how books and poetry can be brought alive through technology.”

She added: “As the CI’s leading mobile provider, JT recognises the pace of technology, and as such we are currently investing in a fibre network that will future proof Guernsey’s communication network for future generations. This huge investment will help to ensure our children are educated at a higher level compared to other jurisdictions and to further help provide schools with digital connectivity. In addition it will enable consumers and business to take full advantage of all the benefits technology delivers, as we all become more digitised. Because of this, our partnership with the Guernsey Literary Festival is the perfect way to support literary education in the island, as well as showcase the benefits of digital technology to a wider audience.”

JT is also supporting the Literary Technology Centre at the Guille Alles Library to help enable the public to go and engage with the latest devices and software.
