Complete Mathematics: Continuation of States of Guernsey Agreement as Mathematics Improvement Partners

Complete Mathematics is pleased to announce the continuation of our partnership with the States of Guernsey with a five-year agreed term. Following the successes of this first year together, the States of Guernsey are building the provision to give secondary mathematics teachers, and primary mathematics leaders, access to on-demand CPD courses through the Complete Mathematics CPD Library. This is in addition to the continued access to our online CLASSROOM and TUTOR platforms for all teachers and pupils in States of Guernsey schools providing secondary phase teaching, and The Guernsey Institute.

Nick Hynes, Director of Education, said of this partnership with Complete Mathematics:

"The activities of the plan are completely aligned with the priorities and commitments of our Education Strategy; for example this initiative is about using partnerships to continuously improve education and developing our curriculum in line with best practice."

Our products and services, including in-person visits from our Head of Mathematics Stuart Welsh, support evidence-based teaching and learning of mathematics. They form the backbone of our partnership with Guernsey schools, along with their use of our online platforms

Clare Sealy, Head of Education Improvement, States of Guernsey:

"Complete Mathematics is helping schools develop their use of day-to-day assessment, so that the maths they teach is the right maths for the child. Some of us will remember maths as being something that either went too fast for us, or too slow for us. This valuable programme enables teachers to adapt their teaching so that children are taught the maths they are ready to learn."

Feedback from Heads of Maths has shaped our bespoke CPD offer. This year, we will deliver a series of CPD sessions for teachers on the evidence-based practices that Guernsey Heads of Maths are modelling and developing within their departments. Teachers will be equipped to embed this professional learning through their planning, supported by our online solutions which have a continuity of approach, and in alignment with the curriculum.

Gareth Jones, Head of Mathematics, St Sampson’s High School:

"Stuart from Complete Mathematics spent two days in our department visiting several lessons and speaking with teachers and students. Following that visit, the support from Complete Mathematics is helping transform teaching and learning in our department. We knew we had to make changes to improve attainment and since we began working with Complete Mathematics, the department has reviewed and overhauled our approach to curriculum design. Teacher feedback has been positive, and we already see the benefits to pupil engagement. We have had bespoke CPD and Complete Mathematics has helped us establish clear targets in terms of pedagogy.

"I have benefited hugely from working with Stuart and the wider team at Complete Mathematics and am very excited for the future of maths teaching here at St Sampson’s."

Complete Mathematics provides teachers with accessible CPD. Through our comprehensive online CPD Library; by working directly with schools and school groups, and in teachers’ day-to-day use of our curriculum planning tools; and through our events, both online and in-person. These bring teachers together for networking and CPD workshops, harnessing the expertise that already exists within the sector. Stephanie Taylor, Primary Education Development Officer for States of Guernsey, delivered a session at our London event earlier this year on relationships between mathematical reasoning, fluency and problem solving, and the practice she modelled was described by one of the delegates as ‘genius’. In the Autumn term, we were delighted to welcome a group of Guernsey’s maths leaders across primary and secondary phases to one of our MathsConf events. Enabling teachers to make continual, incremental improvements to their practice can impact thousands of pupils in the course of a teacher’s career.

Jamie Southerington, Chief Revenue Officer, Complete Mathematics:

"Our school support packages are developed to meet the unique needs and aims identified by the schools and school groups we work with, and we have found these to be very effective alongside our online solutions. We aim to empower Guernsey’s teachers through this partnership with time-saving, evidence-based solutions, and bespoke professional learning. We look forward to seeing the impacts of increasingly effective teaching and learning across the agreed term. For us, this is an exciting opportunity to show the true value of our online solutions coupled with our bespoke CPD services."

As a company on a mission to improve mathematics education for all pupils, we value the trust and confidence placed in us by the States of Guernsey. With demonstrable expertise over 10 years as a Mathematics Improvement Partner with schools and school groups in the UK and overseas, together with in-house development of software supporting highly-effective practices for teaching and learning of mathematics, Complete Mathematics is delighted to build upon the successes of the 2022/23 school year. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of this partnership with Bailiwick teachers on outcomes in mathematics for Guernsey’s young people.

Clare Sealy, Head of Education Improvement, States of Guernsey:

"Many parents would like to be able to afford a tutor for their child, and through TUTOR, we are providing every child in our state secondary schools with a way of accessing online tuition aligned to their particular learning needs. This will be set by their secondary schools for homework, but parents can encourage their children to use it even more frequently, opening up opportunities otherwise inaccessible for many families. Pivotal to our education strategy is fairness. We want to ensure that every learner has everything they need to be successful – TUTOR is one of those tools."
