Chamber’s 2014 programme of networking and business events got off to a flying start on 17 January with over 80 people attending a breakfast seminar on social media.

The seminar was the first in a series of five events sponsored by Grant Thornton being held throughout the winter months covering a number of key issues facing businesses across all industry sectors. Topics include cash flow management, customer service and starting up a new business.

The two speakers at the social media seminar gave succinct but insightful presentations on how businesses could harness the benefits of incorporating these channels into any communications campaign. Jo Porritt of Crowd Media emphasised the importance of the planning and research stage before embarking on any social media activity and Nic Legg of Coast Media presented a case study on his campaign undertaken to garner support for Guernsey Football Club.

Charlotte Dunsterville, customer service director at Sure, who attended the event commented:

‘I enjoyed the seminar and found Jo Porritt's presentation particularly useful as we are currently developing our social media strategy in relation to customer support and customer engagement. I came away with some very useful tips - for example using social media platforms as part of our competitor analysis.

The event certainly broadened my view on how social media can be integrated into our overall customer communications activity.’

Dave Clarke, managing director of Grant Thornton explained his organisation’s involvement:

‘ I'm delighted that we can support such an exciting seminar series and one that will surely help the Guernsey business sector.  It’s very pleasing to see so many people attending and the quality of the speakers was excellent. I look forward to the forthcoming events which cover a wide range of topics.’

All seminars in the series are being held at Les Cotils and run from 0730 to 0900. Details of forthcoming events are:

Entrepreneurship, The Rocky Road 6 Feb
Managing your Cash Flow & Solvency 27 Feb
Recruitment & Succession Planning 20 March
Customer Service 10 April
