Advocate Mark Dunster has been appointed Bâtonnier of the Guernsey Bar. A partner at Carey Olsen Guernsey, Advocate Dunster was elected by his fellow members of the Bar and took over from Advocate Mark Helyar at the end of October.

The Bâtonnier is the head of the Guernsey Bar and is appointed for a period of two years. The role carries wide responsibilities including dealing with complaints of professional misconduct, liaison with the States of Guernsey on legislative reform and managing with the structure of professional training and qualifications.

Advocate Dunster specialises in litigation, compliance and financial regulatory matters. He holds a Master's degree in commercial litigation and is the author of books on anti-money laundering and data protection as well as being the current Chairman of the Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers and an IoD certified director.

Advocate Dunster said: "The justice system is a fundamental pillar of our society and one of the strengths upon which our reputation as an international financial centre rests. The public must have faith in both the system and the lawyers who work within it. The Bar Council is essential to that confidence and to maintaining the high standards of those involved in advising on and delivering Guernsey law. I am looking forward to the challenges that the role will bring and, in particular, to working with fellow members of the Bar Council."
