The 17th Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Annual Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival will be the biggest in the event’s history with the largest number of teams set to compete.
A total of 42 teams, made up of 420 primary school children, will take part in the festival on Saturday 19 March.
The teams will be split in two for the event: years three and four in one group, and years five and six in the other with all competing in cup, plate and bowl competitions. Due to the increased number of teams this year, eight pitches will be used simultaneously during the festival to play 127 games of Tag Rugby on the day.
Tag Rugby is a non-contact version of rugby and is played in squads of 10-12 players, with seven players on the pitch at any one time.
Rugby Development Officer Steve Melbourne and the team at the Guernsey Rugby Association organise the festival each year with assistance from the local Rugby Academy and Clubs.
Mr Melbourne said: “This is a fantastic event in the Guernsey Rugby calendar which has grown each year.
“Last year’s event showcased a number of skilled young players with St Martin’s Junior and Senior teams taking home the Cups. This year, the number of teams and participants has increased once again which is testament to the fantastic level of support the event receives from the Island’s Primary Schools.
“This event has strengthened the local rugby community and I would like to thank Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management for their continued support for this the 17th festival.”
Trophies and medals will be presented to the winning teams in the three competitions as well as to the ‘most sportsmanlike team’ in each age group. In addition, all participants will receive a certificate and an event branded T-shirt from Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management as a memento of the day.
Andy Finch, Head of Wealth Management at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management in Guernsey, said: “Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management is proud to sponsor the Annual Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival which is a great opportunity to encourage children to take an interest in rugby and to understand the value of sport in a fun and competitive way.
“Steve and the Guernsey Rugby Association are doing fantastic work to raise the profile of the sport and champion rugby excellence in the island, especially in schools."
The Festival will take place on the pitch at the Garenne Stand at Footes Lane between 9.30am and 2pm on Saturday 19 March. Refreshments for family, friends and players will be available throughout the day.
