Brock scholarship awarded to student at The Ladies’ College

Lydia Datta, an Upper Sixth student at The Ladies’ College, has been formally awarded the island-wide Brock University academic scholarship this year.

Each year, Brock University in St Catharine’s, Canada, awards a full academic scholarship to a student in Guernsey. This partnership has been ongoing for years and honours the legacy of local Guernsey man Sir Isaac Brock who commanded the British and Canadian forces during the War of 1812.

Commenting on her achievement, Lydia Datta said: ‘I first heard about the scholarship from seeing it in the local media when I was younger, but I hadn’t considered applying until last year. The application process involved sending my academic transcript, a letter of recommendation, and why I was applying to the States Education Department.

‘To be offered this scholarship is a true honour and I am excited to represent my island in a new continent. I have always wanted to travel and explore new places, so I am profoundly grateful to both Brock University and the States of Guernsey for helping me to reach my goals.’

Lydia has attended The Ladies’ College since Remove (Year 7), and is now studying for her History, English and French A-Levels at the Sixth Form. She will travel to Canada to start her four-year degree this summer and will continue studies in History and French.

She added: ‘I would like to thank all the teachers and staff who have taught me throughout my time at The Ladies’ College, your support has not gone unrecognised.

‘Having lived in Guernsey all my life, moving to Canada will be a big change but I’m super excited for what the future will bring. I cannot wait to explore new places, expand my knowledge and meet new people.’

Principal of The Ladies’ College, Mrs Clancy, said: ‘Lydia is an incredibly bright young lady, and we are thrilled to have supported her with applying for this scholarship. She is a great role model for all our girls having been involved fully in the life of the school, leading our Charities’ Action Team and representing the College in a wide range of co-curricular events. She’s worked incredibly hard for this scholarship and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.’
