With a commitment to providing every child with the best start in life, the organisation is rebranding its literacy service, previously known as ECOF (Every Child Our Future), to 'The Next Chapter', as part of a broader effort to streamline all services under the Bright Beginnings’ title.
The literacy programme trains and facilitates members of the local community to read with learners in schools. It is a valuable component of Bright Beginnings’ range of services in Guernsey and is a key part of their mission to provide children with opportunities to thrive.
Available to local mainstream primary schools, the initiative relies on the support of local companies as well as dedicated community volunteers. All volunteers complete an online Safeguarding Children and Young People Level 1 course, have a Disclosure and Barring Service check and attend a one-hour training session before being placed in a school. Volunteers typically commit to an hour a week at their placement school for a minimum of one term; however, any additional time is always greatly appreciated.
The programme not only equips learners with crucial reading skills but also plays a role in fostering positive mental well-being. Research conducted by the National Literacy Trust (NLT) in 2019 showed that “children who enjoy reading are three times more likely to have good mental well-being than children who don’t enjoy it.” Research also indicates that children who struggle with literacy are far more likely to fall behind age-related expectations, showing the importance of the programme in helping to close academic gaps.
To enhance its impact, Bright Beginnings welcomed Emma Mauger as the Literacy Director to the Bright Beginnings’ Board in 2022 and Lisa Blondel as CEO, holding overall responsibility for all three strands of the charity, in 2023. Emma and Lisa collaborate closely with Andrew Bichard, Literacy Programme Co-ordinator and The Next Chapter's key point of contact, to develop and support the programme. Andrew said: “It is wonderful to see members of the Bailiwick community become actively involved in this important scheme which allows children to develop an enjoyment of reading. Bright Beginnings is committed to supporting the expert work of schools through the provision of volunteer reading support and looks forward to continuing to help develop literacy levels on the island.”
In addition to visiting schools, ‘The Next Chapter’ volunteers assist the Guille-Allès Library during the annual Summer Reading Challenge to further support children in their literacy journey outside of term time. Adam Bayfield, Head of Marketing and Customer Services, explains: "Volunteers are essential to making the Summer Reading Challenge a success. They provide vital support in signing the children up, talking to them about the books they've read, and encouraging them to keep going. Last year they helped more than 2,000 children take part, inspiring a love of reading for pleasure and making a difference to their summers. We're extremely grateful to the volunteers for all their help."
