The Bailiwick of Guernsey Scout Association is working towards opening its first new section for 35 years to support early years children in learning essential skills for life.

Squirrels will be aimed at four to six year-old children. It will join existing younger sections Beavers and Cubs, with Squirrel members wearing red uniforms and their own specially designed sets of badges.

The early years programme aims to build up a positive, safe environment for young children to develop, and will include activities like pitching a blanket tent, planting seeds and running experiments.

New badges that Squirrels can earn will include Feel Good, Be Active, Explore Outdoors, Brilliant Builder and Exciting Experiments.

Jane King, Deputy Bailiwick Commissioner said “We are hugely excited to be launching this pilot, the first in Guernsey, and hope to start running sessions from the beginning of May until July. To enable a successful pilot, however, we need volunteers, and so we are reaching out to the community for their support. We need volunteers to help us ensure that our young children across the Bailiwick can experience this brilliant opportunity and start their journey into Scouting. All of our volunteers are intrinsic to the success of the organisation whether they help in the background once a month or on the frontline every week. We can find a role for anyone who wants to help young people and work as a team with others. Contact jane.king@scouts.org.gg if you would like more information.
