La Société Guernesiaise is now accepting applications for its 2022 bursary.

The £1000 bursary is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and aims to support students studying subjects related to biodiversity and conservation of the natural environment. One of La Société’s aims is to encourage the study and conservation of Guernsey’ nature. In line with this aim, this bursary is accessible to anyone not pursing higher education, but who intends to, or is, researching aspects of Guernsey’s wildlife and ecology. The Guernsey Biological Records Centre can offer office space, advice, and support to on-island researchers.

The current bursary is in its third year, and was made possible thanks to a generous donation from a Société member. This bursary replaces the previous Griff Caldwell bursary, which was established in memory of Major Frank Griffiths ‘Griff’ Caldwell, a past president of La Société.

Past recipients have studied subjects including Environment and Media, Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences. Last year’s winner, Clare Marshall, an MRes student studying marine biology at the University of Plymouth.

Clare has extensive marine conservation experience, having volunteered for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the Marine Biological Association and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science to name a few. Clare is undertaking a research project on the island’s seagrass habitats.

The bursary application form and more information can be found on our website: https://societe.org.gg/wp/bursary/. La Société’s Scientific Committee would also welcome questions from any potential applicants – these should be emailed to science@societe.org.gg.
