Appleby and Deliotte £1800 and not out!

Cricketers from Appleby and Deloitte met for the fourth annual ‘Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) Ashes’ match at the King George V Club playing fields (KGV) on Thursday 1 September 2016. In a closely fought contest it all came down to the last ball with Appleby able to scrabble a single to earn a draw and retain the urn. Both companies have supported MUG since the charity’s launch, this is the fourth year the cricket fundraiser has been organised by Appleby and Deloitte, and collectively the event has now raised around £1800.

The 14:14 match (reduced due to the possibility of fading light!) saw Deloitte post a commanding 118/9.  Appleby responded with 118 for the loss of eight wickets to force the draw with valuable contributions from both Michael Mabbett and Dave Mahoney.

We are less than delighted however, with the Appleby dramatic last over run-fest which saw them draw level to retain the ‘Urn’ from what looked like an unassailable Deloitte lead!”

The focus of MUG is to increase awareness and promote education around cancers which affect men, specifically testicular, prostate and bowel cancers. MUG aims to get men, whatever their age, to be more confident, outgoing and questioning of their medical symptoms.  Most importantly, the charity wants to encourage men to seek medical advice and assistance at the earliest opportunity - as procrastination or delays can have serious consequences on treatment options and health outcomes. 

As well as education and awareness activities, the award-winning charity is committed to financially supporting Guernsey’s first male cancer specialist nurse for three years.  The role of the uro-oncology nurse includes helping male urological patients who are undergoing treatment for a number of different male cancers.  Patients have access to the specialist nurse through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery stages of their cancer care. 

Next year’s match will take place on Thursday 29 June 2017 at the KGV.
