Relative newcomer to The Royal Guernsey Golf Club (RGGC) Ladies’ section, Amy Bourgaize, was the outright winner on Tuesday (14 May) in the annual coveted Trident Trophy achieving a seven point lead over second place winner, Liz Darling.
Bourgaize, playing off 32, came in with 43 stableford points which resulted in a five stroke reduction to her handicap.
Added to this achievement, conditions could only be described as very challenging for the 62 golfers who took part on the day. Although the sun was shining, a strong wind was blowing in from the north east across the majority of the front nine with players battling head in to the wind on half of the back nine.
This did not seem to deter Bourgaize who just kept her play as steady as possible achieving four pars along the way to take the trophy with ease.
RGGC Ladies Captain, Alice Hurford, had been partnering Bourgaize and said that three of the pars she made scored four points each.
“She played steadily and was rarely off the fairway, chipping and putting very consistently. She has been practicing quite a lot which has certainly paid off – she deserved her win,” said Hurford.
Next up with a very respectable 36 points was Darling (off 16) resulting in a reduction of one shot, followed closely by Lesley Aylward with 34 points who also reduced her handicap by one.
Roch Vaudin took the best scratch prize scoring 33 points beating Sue Wellfair on countback, resulting in a reduction of 0.2 to her 8.7 handicap. Scoring 20 points on the opening nine holes, the wind didn’t seem to phase the up and coming player who started with a confident birdie on the first followed by a second on the 15th. Along with four pars, this was enough to secure the scratch title.
Travel Trident, who is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has been sponsoring the competition since 1985. To present the prizes was managing director Peter Wilcox, who in theme with the company’s anniversary also presented a prize to the 50th placed golfer, Jane Kinley.
