Two accountants from KPMG in the Channel Islands are visiting Kagera this month and will be working with the Tumaini Fund to perform an operational review of their accounting procedures.
KPMG are matching the time they have taken as annual leave as part of the firm’s Corporate Citizenship programme. The firm is also donating a laptop for them to use during their work which will then be presented to the Tumaini workers in Tanzania, along with essential supplies to enable the children to attend school.
KPMG’s Kelly Dawson and Ben Creasey are pictured with Dr Susan Wilson of the charity. “This is an incredible opportunity, to visit somewhere so different, using our own skills to help the charity continue their amazing work in the region. We are hoping to not only offer our accounting knowledge and skills, but also experience first-hand the work of the charity and help with other aspects, such as the water projects in the region and distributions of school equipment to the children.” said Ben.
This is the second time KPMG has supported staff working with Tumaini. Audit Assistant Glenda Bosha visited Kagera two years ago to help with accounts preparation. Staff at the firm also support Tumaini Fund in other ways. For example, KPMG in the Channel Islands regularly donate office supplies, hold fundraising days to raise money for school fees for the orphans, and volunteer for the Guernsey flag days. In addition to these efforts, ten staff who attended the recent Tumaini anniversary dinner clubbed together to donate money to buy a house for widows and orphans.

The Tumaini Fund is a Guernsey-based charity established in 2001 by Dr Susan Wilson with the aim of alleviating the suffering of AIDs widows and orphans in Kagera, the north-west province of Tanzania. This is achieved through the improvement of standard of living and promotion of good health and education. The charity was recognised at the Guernsey Community Awards 2012, winning the Overseas Award, and Dr Susan Wilson was last year awarded the MBE for her work.
