Friday 18 May saw this year’s ABN AMRO Inter Schools Cup golf tournament take place at St Pierre Park Golf Centre. A fantastic event, 80 children took part from eight schools, including two more schools than last year. Elizabeth College proved to be the overall winners on the day, taking home the winner’s trophy and with all participants enjoying a special goody bag.

The ABN AMRO Inter Schools Cup, also supported by the Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation, provides secondary school children the chance to experience the sport and all it has to offer. ABN AMRO also sponsors the Guernsey Golf Academy that is run throughout the year by PGA golf professional Phil Sykes.Working with each school individually at the new golf centre, Sykes provided a structured coaching programme over a number of weeks to all the pupils following which all the schools came together to compete for the Inter Schools Cup to try out their new found skills.

‘It has been an excellent year once again for both the Inter Schools Cup and Golf Academy training programme. With the continued support and sponsorship of ABN AMRO we have been able to make golf accessible and fun for more pupils than ever before. This is the second year of the initiative and it has been fantastic see the number grow from last year and watching the improved abilities of many of the participants who were also with us in year one and the influx of many new faces this year,’said Phil Sykes, PGA golf professional.

Pim van den Heuvel, CEO and Channel Islands Country Executive of programme and tournament sponsors ABN AMRO, said, ‘ABN AMRO has supported the Golf Academy and Inter Schools Cup for a number of years and we are thrilled to see it growin success, with more youngsters both returning to the programme and taking it up for the first time. An excellent afternoon, it is not only a lot of fun to get outside and see the teams taking part in a friendly competition but it is also very important to promote an outdoor activity that many kids may not be aware they have access to to.’
